Stepstone Cowl
Here’s a super cozy, versatile cowl with lots and lots of size options. Plus, a fun stitch pattern worked in the round, with stockinette blocks of slipped stitches, and garter stitch stripes to keep your interest. Includes both written and charted instructions for the stitch pattern. Add 2 colors of soft sportweight yarn and you’ll soon have a new favorite cold-weather accessory.
Yarn: Any sportweight yarn in two colors. Consider using a variegated MC and solid CC. Shown in: (MC) Lorna’s Laces Shepard Sport (200yds/182m) in color “Tahoe”, a variegated yarn in shades of blue, purple, and turquoise. (CC): Pediboo Sock(255yds/233m) in color “1101”, a solid charcoal grey (now discontinued). For the size 29 in/73.5cm around, with 6 ½ pattern repeats, aprox. 180 yds/165m of each color were used. DK weight yarn knit at the same gauge can be used for a thicker cowl with less drape.
Gauge: 4.5 sts/in- 18 sts/4in, 18 sts/10cm in pattern stitch.
Needles: Size needed to obtain gauge. I used US 4/3.5mm (16-in circular).
Sizes: Five sizes. 24.5in/62cm around, 29 in/73.5cm around (shown), 33in/84cm around, 38in/96.5cm around, 42in/106.5cm. Your choice of height.
Skills: Cast on, cast off, knit, purl, slip stitches while carrying yarn in back, knit in the round.
