Stitch Along Winter 2007 Mitered Corner Shawl
From the website description: “ARNie’s Extra Large Shawl used 30 oz of worsted weight yarn and a K sized (swivel) cable hook. This shawl measured 9 feet across the top and 4 ½ feet from neck to tip.
Your shawl can be much smaller than this, just work to your desired size and end off.
Notes:
Due to the nature of TC, the upper edge may not be perfectly straight…this is not a Monk type project. You can spend hours ripping and re-stitching to get that edge perfectly straight (the problem lies in the Return), or add an edging of Back Crossed Dc (regular crochet) to easily disguise the imperfections of this top edge.
When using a K hook and worsted weight yarn, the Knit/Purl stitch combos make a dense and heavy project perfect for winter wear. For a lighter weight shawl, use a smaller yarn with the K hook, OR the worsted weight yarn and a larger hook,
If you don’t have a cabled hook, I would suggest using 2 hooks: one for each side. Pick up stitches on the first side up to the Tip, place a pinch type paper clip (bull dog clip) on the hook to hold the stitches. With the second hook, continue picking up stitches down the other side. Return as you normally would first with one hook, then with the second.
You will notice that the edge stitches are not quite the same on both ends; these are structural techniques I use to keep prevent loose ‘beginning’ stitches and gaping holes on the other end.
I use an Extended Knit stitch in the tip to keep the dimensions correct for this type of shawl. Without the ExTks, the shawl does not have the height, which is what a tall person wants…( I’m 6’1”).“
