This design is the ninth of a series—twelve explorations of different knit-purl stitch patterns throughout 2025. This “Harris Tweed” stitch pattern is a classic, reversible stitch pattern. It is featured in Barbara Walker’s Treasury of Knitting Patterns, first published in 1968, and Cecilia Campochiaro lists it as “Ridging 3-3” in her 2025 book, Reversible Knitting: A Handbook and Stitch Dictionary. Here, we’ll explore ideas for re-sizing the stitch pattern. The pattern document includes general instructions for working the traditional 6-stitch “Harris Tweed” stitch pattern flat and in the round, as well as specific instructions for a sample square in a 4-stitch repeat, and a blanket in a 12-stitch version of the “Harris Tweed” stitch pattern. It also includes a few designer ideas to help inspire your own designs featuring the “Harris Tweed” stitch pattern.

This is an easy project. The techniques you will need to know, or learn, to complete this blanket are:

  • cast on and bind off;
  • knit and purl.
