This design is the third of a series—twelve explorations of different stitch patterns throughout 2026—and the third of three projects focused on eyelets and lace. This month, we’re working on what is generally called “Spider Stitch”—a good stitch pattern for knitters new to lace because so many rows are the same. The pattern document includes general instructions for working the “Spider Stitch” pattern flat and in the round, as well as specific instructions for a sample square, and a boomerang-shaped shawl. I’ve knit the shawl in a DK weight yarn, but consider turning this design into a “one-skein wonder” by knitting a smaller version with one 100-g skein of fingering weight yarn.

The techniques you will need to know, or learn, to complete this project are:

  • cast on and bind off (instructions for a lace bind-off are included);
  • knit and purl;
  • yo increase;
  • kyok double increase;
  • k2tog decrease;
  • ssk decrease;
  • cdd double decrease.
