Stormcloud Mitts
Deep purple-grey and silver beads evoke the angry clouds and rain of a summer storm. A beaded eyelet and gathered yarn over panel covers the back of the hand and wrist, with the palm, top and bottom cuffs all worked in garter stitch. The mitts are worked flat and seamed on the outer edge using mattress stitch.
Materials:
- 1 x 100g skein of Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light in shade Composition Book Grey.
- 190 Matsuno size 8 round tubular seed beads in silver lined transparent crystal (approximately 10g.)
- 2.25mm needles.
- 0.60mm crochet hook.
- Stitch markers.
- Waste yarn.
Dimensions:
- Length - 24cm/9.5”
- Circumference across palm - 18cm/7”
Gauge:
- 28sts and s8 rows on 2.25mm needles to 10cm/4” in garter st after wet blocking.
Construction:
The mitts are started at the bottom cuff and knit flat. The beads are added using the crochet hook/as you go method. The mitts are seamed on the outer edge using mattress st.
The pattern contains both charted and full written instructions.
Yarn substitutions:
Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light is finer than standard 4ply yarns, so sock yarn or heavy lace would be a good substitute. Standard 4-ply will make a slightly larger glove, which you may wish to do if made for hands which are larger than average.
Working in the round; I designed the mitts to be knit flat because I found that the pattern stitch did not look quite as good when I tried it in the round, due to the bias of the fabric. However if you want to work in the round the instruction ‘pkp’ needs to be worked differently as it’s formed on a wrong side row in the pattern.
Work on RS as follows; Insert right hand needle from front under the bundle of 4 yo strands to the right of the bead st and knit them together, removing them from left needle (but not the bead st) and bring them to the front of the work. P the bead st, making sure that you are working the st so that it will be behind the bundle of yarn over not in front of it, then insert left hand needle back under the bundle of 4 yo strands from the front, this time to the left side of the bead st and knit them together again.
Errata Row 61 reads ‘Chart 1.’ This is a typo, it should say ‘Beaded Pattern.’
