Once we venture past the zone where light penetrates the ocean, the dark depths of the sea are filled with strange and captivating creatures. We know remarkably little about the deep ocean. More than 80% of the ocean remains unexplored. And because it’s difficult to protect what we don’t know, only about 7% of the world’s oceans are designated as marine protected areas.
Even though we know so little about these deep-sea creatures and the ocean floor, commercial fishermen and mining companies are moving in.
