JUDY FURLONG’S elegant gilet, featured on the front cover of The Knitter Issue 108, incorporates darts in the front and back, side shaping, and bust darts to give a gently tailored feel. It is finished with bound edges, which require stitches to be picked up on the WS of the gilet and the cast-off edge to be sewn down on the RS of the garment. “The integral cowl may be arranged to suit the wearer and may be knitted as long or short as you prefer,” says Judy. “This is an easy way to arrange it: with the cowl hanging free down the back, put on the gilet and button it up. Start by pulling the entire cowl to the front, right over your head, and let it hang down in front. Fold left over right (up near the neck), reach down to the lowest edge and pull this edge back over your head.”
