Stripey Sleeves of Warmth

You know how you feel in the autumn and winter when you want to wear a short sleeved t-shirt, but then your arms get cold, but then you put on a sweater, but then you get too warm? What is a knitter to do to remedy this? Knit a pair of arm warmers of course!

I was inspired to knit my Stripey Sleeves of Warmth by Emily (chainoffools on Ravelry), the amazing hostess of the Fibre Town video podcast. She knit a gorgeous pair of arms warmers that she called “Happiness is a striped mitt.” I was instantly in love with what I saw and asked Emily for the pattern. She told me she figured it out as she knit, so I decided to do the same.

I wanted to use 3 colourways in mine, but I wanted the stripes to be random. So I decided to roll a die at each colour change to determine the width of each stripe of colour.

I absolutely adore how my sleeves turned out. I wear them quite often and I send wishes of gratitude to Emily every time I wear them! It is with Emily’s blessing that I now publish my recipe for these arm warmers. I hope you’ll love your Stripey Sleeves of Warmth as much as I do!!!!!

I cast on both sleeves separately on zoom zoom asymmetrical needles (although the purchaser could easily adapt it for magic loop, two circulars, or double points). I then knit a stripe of colour on one sleeve and then repeated it on the second sleeve.

What are Zoom Zoom Needles? Zoom Zoom Needles are my affectionate name for 9” (23cm) circular needles. I renamed them this because you can just zoom zoom round in circles. My preferred brands are Hiya Hiya Sharps & KA Asymmetrical Needles.

The German Twisted Cast-On and Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off are used in this pattern.

The knitter needs to be comfortable with the following techniques: knit, purl, ktbl, ssk, + k2tog. Instructions for all these techniques are included in the pattern.

This pattern includes instructions written in a recipe format. It can easily be converted to any size desired.
