The Sula Socks are inspired by Sula nebouxii, the Blue-Footed Booby, a marine bird native to the Pacific Coast of North and South America, concentrated in the Galapagos Islands. Blue-footed boobies are famous for their bright blue feet, which females examine to choose the best mate. Why shouldn’t your feet get just as much attention with a pair of beautiful lace socks?

Pattern Description

These socks make use of a simple, short-repeat lace pattern that looks like tiny bird feet. They are knit toe-up, with a contrast toe, cuff, and reinforced rounded afterthought heel. The right and left socks are worked identically, and corresponding written instructions are provided for the chart.

This pattern requires the knitter to be able to knit a small circumference in the round (either on double-pointed needles or your preferred technique for socks) and clearly explains all techniques for increases, decreases, and picking up an afterthought heel. Within the pattern you will find links to useful video tutorials as well, so the pattern is easily accessible to an intermediate knitter who is just getting started knitting socks.

Yarn Requirements and Sizing

There are three sizes available: Adult Small (Medium, Large) corresponding to foot circumferences of 18 (20.5, 23) cm / 7 (8, 9) inches — 56 (64, 72) st. The foot length is completely adjustable for a customized fit.

This pattern is best-suited for solid, semi-solid, and smooth gradient yarns for the Main Colour, and anything goes for the Contrast Colour - speckled, variegated, tonal, etc.

Contrast Colour: 80 (90, 100) m / 90 (100, 110) yards
