Summer Days Sunhat
Summer Days Sunhat is an original PlanetJune Accessories crochet hat pattern by June Gilbank.
This hat is a cross between a practical bucket hat and a stylish cloche. Well-fitting sides mean the hat won’t blow off your head in windy weather, and the brim has a solid stitch pattern that will keep the sun out of your eyes! This is an easy-care, easy-wear hat: it doesn’t need blocking and doesn’t have a starched brim, so it’s easy to throw in a bag when you aren’t wearing it without needing to worry about crushing it!
Size: This pattern is crocheted until it reaches the desired size, so you can make the hat to fit anyone from a small child to a large adult. Customize it by measuring the head size of the person you’re making it for, or choose from the provided standard head sizes.
Difficulty: easy/intermediate
Yarn: Fingering/sport weight cotton yarn, less than two 1.75oz (50g) balls for any size.
If you prefer, you can use any cotton/cotton blend yarn of any thickness, but note that lighter yarns will need more yardage, and heavier yarn will need less.
Sample hats were for a 21” head size and used:
- Elle Premier 4-ply (fingering weight) mercerized cotton yarn (pink and natural hats, 1.4 skeins each)
- Patons Grace sport weight mercerized cotton yarn (purple hat, 1.5 skeins)*
Hook: E US / 3.5mm crochet hook
Details: The brim has two options - the floppier, all-yarn version, and a version that incorporates fishing line (aka beading thread, nylon monofilament) to add a little stiffness while leaving the hat foldable but not crushable.
