July Fancy for the Threads of Colour - A Year in Squares

As much as I am enjoying the squares and the planning and plotting that goes into creating each one, it is the Fancy each month that has really caught my heart. I am an avid reader and there are bookmarks in many books, from old receipts to a beat up leather dwarf that lives in my Tolkein books. In all these years I have never knit a bookmark. Maybe I should be knitting more.

Sunny Daze is a little bookmark, double knit flat so that each side is a mirror of the other side. In this version the bookmark is also finished with a knitted fringe.
You could also start the bookmark with the fringe cast-on and have a fringe on both ends.
Bookmark as shown starts with a 2-colour long tail cast-on and finished with a fringe bind-off.

Sunny Daze Bookmark is the July Fancy for the Threads of Colour: A Year in Squares knit-along, a reversible two-colour double knit bookmark worked flat, finished with a knitted fringe.

Double knitting creates two fabric layers simultaneously, so both sides of this bookmark are a perfect mirror image of each other. At just 45-55 yards across two colours, it is a focused, meditative project that makes the most of treasured fingering weight scraps.

Construction and technique

• Double knitting worked flat: both sides are a complete mirror image, fully reversible
• Cast on: 2-colour long tail cast-on
• Bind off: fringe bind-off for a knitted fringe on one end
• Optional variation: begin with a fringe cast-on to place fringe on both ends
• Techniques required: double knitting, 2-colour long tail cast-on, fringe bind-off, reading a double knit chart

• Yarn weight: Light fingering (sample uses Cascade 220® Fingering by Cascade Yarns)
• Yardage: 45-55 yards (41-50 m) total across two colours
• Needles: US 1 / 2.25 mm
• Gauge: 8.5 sts = 1” in double knit stockinette
