I have been on a journey combining crocheted granny squares with knitting for a while now, but this is my first time mashing up my two favourite things in an accessory pattern! For some reason my brain thinks in terms of sweaters, but oh my gosh if this isn’t just the cutest hat! It’s super quick to make and is perfect for gifting. Fair warning: once you start it’s hard to stop making these adorable hats!

Unstretched hat circumference: 44.5 (53.5, 62) cm / 17.5 (21, 24.5)” to fit a child (small adult, large adult) head.

This hat pattern features a 4 round granny square, with either 5 (6, 7) squares sewn together to form a band around the circumference of the hat. I’ve also made the hat successfully featuring a 5 round granny square, but that only works for the size medium due to the scale of the squares. The neon pink and navy blue samples are the 5 round square alternative construction medium size. I’ve included instructions at the end of the pattern for how to modify the size medium to feature the 5 round squares.

Gauge
22 stitches and 28 rows = 10 cm / 4” square in stockinette stitch, on larger needles after wet blocking.
4 round granny square measures 9 cm / 3.5”
5 round granny square measures 10.75 cm / 4.25”

Recommended Needles
Size F 3.75mm crochet hook.
3.5 mm (US size 4) for brim: 40 cm / 16” circular needles.
4 mm (US size 6) for crown: 40 cm / 16” circular needles and length in your preferred size for working small circumference in the round for the crown decreases.

Yarn
Tanis Fiber Arts PureWash DK (113g = 260 yds). Approx. 100g = 230g

30g = 70 yds for the brim, 50g = 115 yds of assorted colours for the crochet granny squares and 20g = 45 yds for the crown.

I used a variety of leftover odds and ends for my samples. I live for scrappy projects!

Purple Hat: brim in Chris Grey, crown in Lilac, pompom in Tidal.
Green Hat: brim in Chartreuse, crown in Sand, pompom in Cantaloupe.
Neon Pink Hat: brim in Flamingo, crown in Smoke, pompom in Goldenrod.
Navy Blue Hat: brim in Midnight, crown in Chris Grey, pompom in Flamingo.
