Swirl Hat is an easy textured hat that lets your yarn be the star of the show. It’s sized for Adult Medium (20-22”/51-56cm head), but includes notes for modifying the pattern for other sizes.

The swirl pattern is simpler than it seems, and carries through into the decreases at the top of the hat.

Pattern instructions are written, with illustrative chart provided.

Size
One size, Adult M
Circumference: 19” (48 cm)
to fit head size 20-22” (51-56 cm)
Pattern includes notes on modifying hat size.

Yarn
Ewetopia Hill Farm 3 Ply DK (farm to needle, 100% non-superwash Shetland wool)
Leading Men Fiber Arts Targhee Twist DK (66.6% superwash American Targhee wool/33.4% non-superwash American Targhee wool)
or your favorite DK weight yarn

Yardage
140-190 yards (155-210 m)
Modifying the size will change the yardage needed.

Gauge
20 sts and 32 rows to 4” (10 cm) in stockinette stitch, washed and laid flat to dry.
The body of the hat is very forgiving, so gauge is not critical to this project. Use a gauge that results in a fabric you find pleasing.

US5 (3.5mm), or one size smaller than that used to obtain gauge, circular needle, 16” (40 cm) long; used for ribbing

Other
stitch markers, including one unique for beginning of round
yarn needle for weaving in ends
scissors

Customization
Customize your Swirl Hat by:

  • Knitting knitting twice the ribbing for a folded brim (will affect yardage needed)
  • for a slouchier fit, knit more rows in the body section (will require additional yardage)
  • add a pompom on top
  • adjust the size (notes included in pattern)
  • work simplified decreases (included in pattern)
