In both the band and the main part of the hat, the yarn is doubled. But both the main color and the contrast are sport weight, so the hat is still fairly soft. You need equal amounts (170 yards) of each color and you can choose to knit the body of the hat with either the solid color or the handpaint. Quite a nice hat.
