Taconic Hat
This is a hat knit in the round in a tube shape, beginning at the crown with your cast on, increasing to full width and then commencing a short row pattern. The short rows naturally give a 3 dimensional aspect to the hat making it “bubbly”.
It’s a good idea to knit the hat at a tighter gauge:
- because you will use most of the yarn available to you
- because the 3 dimensional structure creates more give to the hat making it grow easily to fit larger heads.
Upon completion of all the short row repeats you will begin the decrease at the opposite crown. This will create an oblong oval shape. Finally to finish, fold one end in the other to create a double thickness, reversible hat.
Size
Pattern is written in 2 sizes, Adult Small and Adult M/L.
The short rows:
The type of short rows you choose to use for this hat is up to you, I use wrap and turn and adjust my picked up stitches to keep them from being twisted. Here is a link to four common methods, pick the one you are most comfortable with:

The colors
This design calls for 4 Freia Fingering Minikins. I alternated colors 1+2 5 times, then colors 3+4 5 times creating a more marked difference in the two ends. The main thing to keep in mind is you will get a max of 5 repeats out of any one ball (or 4 repeats plus a crown end) and you can use the colors in any order you like, but opt for the most dramatic color change between striped to emphasize the short rows.
