Diagonal lines in two directions tumble through three horizontal widths of stripes to create a scarf with both visual and textural interest. While the sample was knit with a DK weight wool and acrylic blend, the simple pattern would adapt well to either lighter or heavier yarns, and to different fibres. A smooth, round yarn will give better stitch definition than woolen-spun or fuzzy yarns. The stitch pattern would disappear with a multi-coloured yarn, although a subtle, semi-tonal shade might be very rich-looking. Swatch with the yarn you want to use to see if it creates a fabric you like. Width is easy to adjust; just cast on more (or fewer) stitches in multiples of six (see Notes). I prefer ending with the same size stripe as I started with, but you can end with any stripe you like before knitting the final border. Be aware that making changes in yarn selection and/or finished size will affect the amount of yarn needed to complete your scarf.
