TEXTURE FOR DAYS

What do you get when you marry textured honeycombs with super-squishy hand-dyed wool? A match made in hat heaven, of course! Thoughtful crown decreases make for a beautifully fitted beanie. Or, add some extra height for a city cool slouchy hat. With two sizes and styles to choose from, there’s an Appleby Hat for everyone on your knit list.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

S/M Beanie (S/M Slouchy): 7.25” / 18 cm (9” / 23 cm) length x 17” / 43 cm circumference, un-stretched; to fit approx. 21-22” / 53-56 cm head circumference.

M/L Beanie (M/L Slouchy): 7.75” / 19.5” cm (9.5” / 24 cm) length x 19” / 48 cm circumference, un-stretched; to fit approx. 22-23” / 56-58 cm head circumference.

YARN

This hat pattern works well with indie-dyed DK yarns, which are generally a bit thicker than many commercial DK yarns. Be sure to check your gauge to ensure proper fit and sufficient yardage.

The modelled Appleby Beanie was test knit using a skein of indie-dyed DK yarn—missing ball band…sorry! The Appleby Slouchy in the other images used:

Cosy Posy Yarn Co. Squish (100% Merino Wool; 250 yards / 228 meters per 115 grams): 1 skein in desired colour.

S/M Beanie (S/M Slouchy): requires ~150 (185) yards = 140 (170) meters.

M/L Beanie (M/L Slouchy): requires ~180 (220) yards = 165 (200) meters.

NEEDLES (adjust needle size if necessary to obtain correct gauge)

Ribbing: 16” (40 cm) circular needle size US 3 (3.25 mm).
Body: 16” (40 cm) circular needle size US 6 (4.0 mm).
Crown: Five double-pointed needles size US 5 (3.75 mm).

GAUGE

Honeycomb Pattern: 30 stitches and 35 rounds = 4” (10 cm) using larger circular needle.

Stockinette Stitch: 19 stitches and 26 rows = 4” (10 cm) using larger circular needle. See note below…

NOTE: For ease of swatching I’ve included my own gauge in Stockinette Stitch—worked flat—unblocked. This information is provided for the sole purpose of helping you select your yarn and needles more efficiently. As with all patterns, results can only be guaranteed when knit at the stated gauge, in pattern.
