The Crayon Box 18-08
The colours of this shawl and the shapes in the lace are meant to evoke the pieces of worn glass that you can find on the beach. Throw it over your shoulders on a cool summer evening, or wrap it around your neck like a scarf on a cold winter day to remind yourself of summer.
This is an intermediate pattern, perfect for knitters new to lace knitting. The shawl is knit from the bottom up on a circular needle to accommodate the large number of stitches. The lace section is knit straight, with three stitches on each end of the needle forming a garter stitch border. The stocking stitch crescent section is shaped with simple short rows that need no wrapping; decreases on subsequent rows close the gaps created by the turns. A garter stitch border is knitted at the top of the shawl, then the stitches are bound off.
Instead of three colours, the entire shawl could be knit with one colour. Or knit the lace section in one colour, and the crescent section in a different colour. With additional yarn, more repeats of the lace pattern can be knit, increasing the depth of the shawl. When making a larger shawl, it would be wise to begin knitting on a larger needle in order to accommodate the stretch needed at the bottom of the crescent.
