I added rows to a classic “Crest of the Wave” stitch pattern so that each of the colour blocks is practically square in this “Colour-Blocked Waves” wrap .

This is a good pattern for knitters who are new to lace knitting. It is a simple rectangle--no shaping required. The lace pattern is easy to learn and remember--only one pattern row that is repeated six times. The waves of lace are enhanced with garter stitch stripes, self-coloured within the block, and in a contrast colour between the blocks.

Koigu produces thousands of colourways to choose from, but any wool-rich fingering weight yarn should produce similar results. Use more muted, solid or heather colours to create a gradient wrap with contrasting stripes between the colour blocks, or knit the entire wrap in one shade of your favourite colour.

The width of the wrap can be altered by adding or subtracting stitches in groups of 12. The length can be changed by adding or subtracting colour blocks, changing the length of each block, or playing with the ratio of lace to garter stitch stripes.

Part of a curated collection of colourful designs inspired by--but not limited to--Koigu’s glorious handpainted yarns.
