The Dreams of Trees

Lidia Yuknavitch speaks of themes and metaphors in writing in her amazing online writing courses. Well, I don’t write much but I do knit a whole hell of a lot. The themes and metaphors that you can clearly see if you look at my patterns… Rain, hard days, struggle. The light and dark and of course leaves, trees, rooting deep and all that potential for growth.

So here we are again, the same lovely gorgeous leafy stitch found in The Lonely Tree, The Elder Tree as well as The Heartwood Cape, but it’s in a new shape. The lovely single-stitch increasing sideways triangle. I am so happy to be able to incorperate the same autumn feel into a new more modern shawlshape for you. I enjoyed knitting this immensely, it’s a big ol’ beautiful pile of leaves to knit.

Yarn:

3 skeins of Quince and Co Owl Tweet in
colourway “Oak” or 330
meters (360 yards) of worsted weight yarn.

Needles:

4.5mm (US 7) circular needles in at least a 24” cord. Or whatever size needles it takes you to get gauge.

Notions:

Whatever tools you prefer to weave in ends and whatever tools you prefer to block your shawls.

Glossary of terms:

K - Knit (K2 = Knit two stitches).
P - Purl (P2 = Purl two stitches).
YO - Yarn Over.
RS - Right Side.
WS - Wrong Side.
M1L - Make 1 stitch Left-leaning.
PM - Place Marker.
SM - Slip Marker.
KFB - Knit into the Front and Back of a stitch.
K2TOG - Knit 2 stitches Together.
SSK - Slip Slip Knit.
S1K2P - Slip 1 stitch, K2TOG, Pass slipped
stitch over.

A note on size:

This pattern is easily made larger! If you’d like to make the shawl bigger, just work Chart A or The Written Instructions for Chart A more times. The same can be said for
making it smaller, just work Chart A or The Written Instructions for Chart A fewer times.
