Whether as an “unworthy scaffold” a “cockpit” or a “wooden O,” Shakespeare often referred to his theatre in his plays. Although he worked in several theaters before the construction of The Globe, that’s the one he’s most famous for. My favorite story about it is the story of its
construction. After a dispute with the owner of the land The Theatre stood on, Peter Street, the actors and theatre’s friends dismantled The Theatre on Christmas night, while the landlord was off at a celebration. They moved the timbers and materials across the river and hid them in a warehouse. I just love to think about the landlord’s surprise when he returned and The Theatre was gone. When it was reassembled, it was also rechristened from The Theatre to The Globe.
