The Grand Old Duke of York
by Cilla Webb
It is believed that this rhyme was written to describe the defeat of Richard, third Duke of York, in 1460, during the War of the Roses. He is said to have left his stronghold and marched down hill where he and his army were overwhelmed and killed by the enemy.
