I returned home to Baker Street upon a raw and foggy night to find Sherlock Holmes kneeling at the fireplace over a large, bundled figure.
“Holmes,” I began, “what on earth have you there?” I perceived a slight motion under the blanket and heard a low snarl. There was a saucer of milk on the floor and slowly comprehension began to dawn upon me. “Good God, Holmes – it’s that great brute of a hound! Still alive!”
“Yes Watson,” Holmes replied. “Sir Henry found it on the moors, barely clinging to life, and dispatched it to me as a token of his appreciation for my efforts on his behalf - in lieu of monetary recompense,” he added grimly. “He seemed quite anxious to be rid of it, actually. I am studying its reaction to a 7% solution concocted for its benefit,” he continued, indicating the saucer of milk. “The beast has amazing recuperative powers and I have total confidence it will soon be restored to its former vigor.”
“And what then?” I demanded. “We can’t keep that monster here in our lodgings – it devours curly-haired spaniels!”
“Only when it has no other sustenance, Watson.” Holmes countered. “Actually, I had thought to present it to Mrs. Hudson as a peace-offering - she has never quite forgiven me for poisoning her little white terrier…” (see Chapter 7 of “A Study in Scarlet”).
“The woman is quite the proponent of animal rights and has a soft spot in her heart for ‘wee doggies,’ as she calls them.” Holmes explained. “I am certain the beast will be totally subdued after a few days of her ‘plain Scots cooking’- no doubt she will soon be crocheting a chequered coat for it to wear on their romps together over the moors…”
