Update, 11/10: I have added a photo tutorial for the seam due to popular request. You can download it above by clicking free Ravelry download. It’s the PDF on the right. I hope it helps!

The Kate Headband

Do you want the look of a twist but not the strange seam? If so, this super bulky headband/earwarmer pattern is for you! The Kate Headband was designed with a special cable and one seam - at the back of the headband, where no one will notice it. It’s a fast and fun project too, perfect for using up scraps.

On April 8, 2020, I added a size: the earwarmer size! Measuring 3.5” by 18-20”, this new addition is designed to pull over your hair, keeping your ears warm. (The headband size, 2.75” by 18-20”, can also be used as an earwarmer but it’s pretty small for that.)

Freebies are such a blessing during this time of financial uncertainty that I’ve decided to offer this pattern free for now. After this pandemic is over and the economy is recovering, I hope to make this pattern $3. Keep an eye out for the worsted, DK, and fingering weight versions - I hope to release them soon too! Thanks so much! 8.19.20: realizing the pandemic won’t be over for quite a while now… so this pattern will stay free for quite a while longer!

You need about 25 yards of a super bulky yarn. I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick Stripes, colorway Hudson Bay. Another option is holding two strands of worsted weight yarn or 3-4 strands of fingering/sport weight yarn.
You’ll also need 9mm (US 13) straight needles.

The cable is fairly easy to work - an interesting maneuver involving all of the stitches, rated advanced beginner. I have provided an in-depth explanation of how to do it in the Glossary of Abbreviations. If you are confused about the directions or otherwise just need help, feel free to comment above or message me and I’ll do my best to help you out.

The Glossary provides descriptions of all stitches/abbreviations used and links to tutorials, making this pattern very beginner friendly.
