The Lake Shall Shine and Burn
“The woods shall wave on mountains
And grass beneath the sun;
His wealth shall flow in fountains
And the rivers golden run.
The streams shall run in gladness,
The lakes shall shine and burn,
All sorrow fail and sadness
At the Mountain-king’s return.”
—J.R.R. Tolkien, “The Hobbit” chapter 10.
Skill-level: Intermediate, due to some lace work, beading, and sock construction; nothing too adventuresome, though.
Materials: 350-400 yards (320-365m) of sock yarn. The socks pictured are a size Large and used approximately 390 yards of Sock Lite from Olann Yarns in the color vessel (PS: this yarn is my new favorite thing in the world). AND 16 size 8/0 beads per inch of leg, and 8 beads per inch of foot. The sample socks used 150 beads per sock.
Needles: US1 (2.25mm) sock needles (pattern is written for both DPN and magic loop knitters)
Tools: Beading needle (or dental floss), tape measure, tapestry needle, scissors
Gauge: 32 stitches & 36 rounds per 4 inches or 10 cm, measured in stockinette stitch.
Sizing: Small (Medium, Large, Extra-large) sizes measure approximately 8(9,10,11) inches around, leg height, ankle depth, and foot length are all adjustable to fit and preference.
Sizing note: the sock fits as a stockinette pattern might, neither restrictive nor elastic.
