The Mati Hat (to protect you from the “evil eye”)
The evil eye, known as μάτι (mati) is known to have been a fixture in Greece dating back to at least the 6th century BC, when it commonly appeared on drinking vessels. You can read more about it here and you can also take a look at the picture shown on the left: I took this photo in the Chaironia Museum and it shows how the Ancient Greeks considered the blue eye symbol to be a talisman or a good-luck charm. It is, of course, a symbol common all around the Mediterranean Sea and even further to the East. So, it MUST be a good way for us to start the new “knitting” year working on this hat and I hope it will bring everyone health and happiness during 2016!
