Note: The pattern photo shows an improvised pattern by a Raveler. The stitch choices are not detailed in the printed article.

This pattern is contained in a 6-page magazine article. There are instructions given for hand knitting and machine knitting. The machine knitting instructions originally appeared in Machine Knitters Source, Jan/Feb, 2000.

Two written patterns, Origami Twist and Candy Swirls, detailing row-by-row instructions and specific yarn and needle sizes are given at the end of the article. One is for women and one is for children.

The pattern details how to improvise yarn and needles of any size to get gauge, then based on the gauge, to figure out measurements. The sleeves are described as being a modified dolman. The fit is described as that of a comfortable sweatshirt.

Two bias strips are knitted from endpoint to endpoint, making two parallelograms, then seamed and folded to make a sweater with long sleeves. The folded edges must be seamed together. Alternatives for necklines, and wrist and waist bands, are discussed.

  • Directions for creating a cut-and-sew neckline are included in the article. Guidelines for making other types of slit or fold-over necklines are given.
  • A suggestion for the bands is to pick up stitches at the cuffs and waists and knit in the round in garter stitch.

US sizes given in the size/measurements chart go from Newborn, finished chest size 22”, to Men’s 58, finished chest size 68”. Measurements include width of the bias strips, length, and amount of positive ease. The ease goes from 4” at the chest for babies, 6” for toddlers and children, 7” for teens, 8”-9” for women, 8” for boys, and 10” for men.

A variation for a short-sleeved version is given. Two written patterns detailing row by row instructions and specific yarn and needle sizes are given at the end of the article. One is for women (Origami Twist) and one is for children (Candy Swirls).
