The Owl is an overly generous sized Faroese shaped shawl, knit from the top down with a knitted on lace border. This shawl is comprised of a center lace panel surrounded by two wings. It is constructed by knitting from two separate charts at the same time. If you are using written directions these charts have been combined.

If you choose to use a gradient shawl set of Unique Sheep’s yarn, directions for transitions are included.

Directions are in both written and chart format. This pattern has been laid out with the intent that you should be able to print only the pages you need. Charts and written directions have been separated and the same notes are included on the pages for both.

Be sure to read through the pattern before hitting print as it is highly unlikely you will need all of the pages!

Difficulty: Intermediate to Advance lace knitter. There is some patterning on wrong side rows. With the exception of one row, all wrong side patterning is in the center panel only.

Final Dimensions: Overly generous. This is a HUGE shawl. My measurements were 84” wingspan by 34” deep. Most testers achieved even larger dimensions.

Gauge: One repeat of the center panel chart measures 6.5” wide by 1.5” deep before blocking, not stretched, just lying naturally. I am aware that most people detest doing gauge swatches so you may check as you go. But, beware that your yarn usage may be different if you proceed in this manner. Note that, because the border is knit on after the body of the shawl, it is possible to use two separate colors of yarn. This could be helpful if you find that you are running short on yarn!

Materials:

  • Yarn: One 4 skein shawl set of Unique Sheep’s lace weight
yarn, or roughly 1000 to 1100 yards of any lace weight yarn.
  • Needles: Size US 4 (3.5 mm) needles or size needed to obtain gauge. (recommended cord length of 32” minimum).
  • Stitch Markers: minimum of 4 (highly recommended
especially if you are knitting from charts)
  • Needle for weaving in ends and pins/matts for blocking.

Optional Materials:

  • Size US E (3.5 mm) crochet hook if you intend to do a provisional cast on.
  • Approximately 7.5 grams of size 8.0 beads (250 beads) and crochet hook/floss or method of placing
  • Scrap or waste yarn for provisional cast on and/or life lines (it is STRONGLY recommend that you use lifelines!)
