When the flurry of December’s festival season has ended and the grayness of January stretches before me, I begin to watch the back corner of the garden. At Summer’s end, this corner is trampled, wilted - as am I. The nourishing coolness and rains of Autumn have revived the plants, though, and there is now a lush green growth that lifts my heart. Getting closer… In only a matter of days, my vigil is rewarded with a first glimpse of purple. A day or two later, the violet patch is a sea of blooms. I. rush out, feeling as though I am in bloom again myself, to pick the blossoms, inhaling deeply their intoxicating scent and tasting their sweet petals. I am encouraged, hopeful, gleeful. The promise of violets.
