They Call Me Ninja
In the history of Japan, a ninja was someone specially trained in assassination, espionage, and a variety of martial arts. There is no evidence that historical ninja limited themselves to all-black suits. In fact, camouflage based upon dark colors such as dark red and dark blue can be used to give better concealment at night.
These socks were inspired by the ninja, and the thought of a stealth, night mission dressed in dark reds. The cables gently sweep back and forth, creating the image of a Ninja’s nunchaku (in Japanese - nunchucks in English) in motion. Ninja’s also wore special socks called Tabi (these had a separation between the big toe and other toes – don’t worry, we are not doing this!). Their footwear is thought to be padded well for virtual silence as they crept through the night.
The socks are worked using four double point needles, employing the fifth needle in the set as a cable needle. The surprisingly easy pattern works up quickly and is ideal for someone who has never tried cables. The cables are worked twice over a twenty row pattern and the rest of the time is mostly employs the knit stitch. This is an excellent pattern for both men and women as extra repeats can be added to accommodate the needed length and the cable pattern is stretchy to either shrink to a petite ankle or grow for a manly foot!
