Till the End of the Dark
~This sock is part of a year-long club, and can only be purchased as part of that club until September 2019, when it will be available for individual sale. Thanks for understanding.~
“To fly would be folly
To stay would be jolly
And listen and hark
Till the end of the dark
to our tune”
— J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit
These lines come from a song that the elves sing as the Dwarves, Gandalf, and Bilbo arrive in Rivendell. The words carry the images of a forest home, safety, rest, and joy. I hope that these socks do, too.
Skill-level: Intermediate— sock construction, large cables, and triple decreases.
Materials: 350-400 yards or 320-365 meters of sock yarn. The socks pictured are a size Large and used 381 yards of Wollmeise Twin in the color Absinth.
Needles: US1 (2.25mm) sock needles, pattern includes directions for DPNs or Magic Loop.
Tools: Cable needle, if necessary, tape measure, scissors, tapestry needle.
Gauge: 34 stitches and 48 rounds per 4 inches or 10 cm in stockinette stitch.
Sizing: Small (Medium, Large, Extra-large) sizes measure approximately 8(9,10,11) inches or 20.3(22.8,25.4,28) cm. around the cuff. Leg height, ankle depth, and foot length are all adjustable to size and preference.
Note on sizing: The large cable is a bit restrictive, but not overly so. I recommend testing the leg of the sock to ensure it fits over the heel.
