A demoted Auror for MACUSA, Tina Goldstein is a bit of an outsider. Possessing keen detective instincts, a strong belief in justice, and a deep compassion for the vulnerable, Tina strives to prove herself to MACUSA and get her job back. Her background and priorities were reflected in her costume. Actress Katherine Waterston says, “I really wanted Tina to wear trousers. That was my idea and something that seemed right to me—that Tina didn’t have much time for herself and, because she lost her parents suddenly, she was thrust into this parental role. I thought she maybe couldn’t be bothered to go to the shop, nor did she have the time, nor would she feel comfortable spending any money on herself … The whole look, we thought, would be something she could’ve found in her parents’ wardrobes and thrown together herself.”

This quintessential Roaring Twenties cloche-style hat with a flipped-up brim knits up loosely and appears oversized when you first finish it. However, it shrinks to fit an average adult-sized head during fulling—a process that shrinks and interlocks the fiber on itself in a washing machine with warm water, wool wash, and friction. Knit in the round from the bottom up with yarn held doubled, a wide grosgrain ribbon is wrapped around the body of the hat after fulling for the finishing touch.
