Tinker Creek Hat and Mitts
SHOWN in Cascade 220 Heathers #9407 Celery in Size Small.
Tinker Creek runs behind my house near the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. In spring and summer, it’s a study in green. The leaves, vines and all the foilage is reflected in the clear waters of the creek. If you follow my Instagram feed, you’ve noticed that I’ve spent a lot of time at the creek this spring.
The repeating theme for the hat and fingerless gloves is a simple. rippling lace pattern. It flows up to the crown of the hat, with two straight lines of twisted stitches on either side. The gloves feature the motif on the top and stockinette on the underside.
The hat is worked in the round, starting with smaller needles. You’ll work K1P1 ribbing for an inch, then change to larger needles to work the body in the charted pattern stitch. Written instructions for the lace pattern are provided. There is a separate chart for the decreases that form the crown, which also includes written instructions.
The finished measurements are :
Size: Child/Teen/Adult Small
16” (41 cm) circumference unstretched, to fit best fit head circumferences of 20”-22” (51 cm -56 cm).
8.5” (22 cm) length from base to top of crown, unstretched.
Size: Adult Medium/Large
18” (46 cm) circumference unstretched, to best fit head circumferences of 22” - 24” (56 cm - 61 cm).
9” (23 cm) length.
The fingerless gloves are worked in the round from the bottom up. You’ll start with ribbing worked in one needle size smaller than the body, to make the cuffs snug around your head and wrists. There are both charts and written instructions for the simple, lace pattern stitch.
The finished measurements are:
Size: Age 10 to Adult Small:
6” (15 cm) circumference, unstretched.
9” (22 cm) length, unstretched.
Size: Adult Medium/Large
7” (18 cm) circumference, unstretched
9” (22 cm) length, unstretched.
GAUGE: For the hat: 22 sts and 28 rnds = 4” (10 cm) working once through the Tinker Creek Hat chart on U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) needles or needles required to match gauge.
For the fingerless gloves, 20 sts and 28 rounds = 4” (10 cm) in stockinette on U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) needles or needles required to match gauge.
The hat requires approximately 110-120 yds (100 - 110 m) worsted weight yarn.
The gloves require approximately 110 - 120 yds (100 - 110 m) worsted weight yarn.
