According to google, originally a Tippet was a scarf-like piece of clothing worn over the shoulders with ends hanging down in front. In later fashion it came to mean any scarf-like covering or capelet. Since this shawl can be worn either way this seemed like the perfect name for this design.

It is a U shaped design worked from side to side using a seed stitch border on all edges with a Purl Twist texture pattern for the 2 front and the center back sections. The U shape is created using short rows and stockinette stitch with a simple 2 row eyelet design as an accent. There is no attempt to hide the short row turns, instead the turns are incorporated into the design. It can be worn low on the shoulders with the eyelet accents over your arms like a cape or close around your neck more like a shawl with the eyelet accents meeting in the center front. A shawl pin is helpful to keep the eyelet patterns lined up while wearing close around your neck.
