Toeing the Line Socks
Pricing update: I have increased my prices to more accurately represent the work that has gone into the making of my patterns. All my patterns have increased in prices, however my newer designs have increased more than my old ones, as I feel I have learned a lot over the years and the quality of my newer designs is higher. The price listed reflects what I believe is fair for the work put into the design, however I understand that the price increases may be inaccessible to some and am offering some tiered discounts for those that need them.
A “Choose What You Pay” model is available for this pattern, allowing both financial accessibility and fair pricing. The buyer may pay what they are able while still valuing the hard work invested to create this design. Use the codes below in order to pay the price listed after each. Choose whichever price works best for you!
- No Code – Full Price = $11.00 CAD
- PK10 – 10% off = $9.90 CAD
- PK20 – 20% off = $8.80 CAD
- PK30 – 30% off = $7.70 CAD
I also offer a Buy 3, Get 1 Free discount! Add any 4 of my patterns to your cart, and use the code BUY3GET1 to get the 4th pattern free! Note: the free pattern will be the lowest priced pattern.
The Toeing the Line Socks pattern is a basic sock pattern with a couple unique little contrast elements. The socks are knit cuff down, with a heel flap and gusset, and uses some simple stripe detailing to give it a bit of flair. It has two variations for leg length as well as an optional arch support section. These are knit using fingering weight yarn. I used the soft, squishy Knitpicks Twill fingering yarn for the shorty version, and KnitPicks Stroll Tweed fingering for the longer version. You can use any other fingering weight yarn you can achieve gauge with though!
SIZES OFFERED:
-measurement is the circumference around the ball of the foot
X-Small: ~7.5 inch circumference (unstretched), can stretch to fit up to about 8.5 inches
Small: ~8 inch circumference (unstretched), can stretch to fit up to about 9/9.5 inches
Medium: ~8.5 inch circumference (unstretched), can stretch to fit up to about 9.5/10 inches
Large: ~9.5 inch circumference (unstretched), can stretch to fit up to about 11/11.5 inches
These measurements are based off of my sample piece, yours may vary slightly depending on gauge and tension. Please choose a size where the measurement of the circumference of the ball of your foot falls within the unstretched-stretched range. A rule of thumb that I have seen is that a sock should be made with about 10% negative ease (eg. my foot circumference is 8.5 inches, I would want a sock that has about 7.65 inch circumference), but you don’t need to follow that exactly. The length of the socks is customizable based on your foot length so only base your size on the foot circumference.
NEEDLES REQUIRED:
US2/2.75 mm 32+ inch circulars for magic loops method (you can also use 9 inch circulars or DPNs if you prefer, though pattern is written for magic loop method)
may need other size needles to meet gauge
GAUGE:
30 sts x 40 rows equals a 4x4 inch square/10x10 cm in stockinette after blocking
7.5 sts x 10 rows equals a 1x1 inch square/2.5x2.5 cm
YARN REQUIRED:
Any fingering weight yarn that you can get gauge with.
Shorty Sample: I used Knitpicks Twill Fingering (183 yds per 50 g ball) in Black Cherry Heather (Main Colour/MC) and Sea Salt Heather (Contrast Colour/CC).
Long Sample: I used Knitpicks Stroll Tweed Tonal Fingering (462 yds per 100 g ball) in Panther (Main Colour/MC) and Knitpicks Stroll Tweed Fingering (231 yds per 50 g ball) Down Heather (Contrast Colour/CC).
YARDAGE REQUIRED:
note the yardage/weight varies between these sample yarn, so if you are using alternative yarns, make sure to calculate based on the yardage not the weight.
Shorty Style:
X-Small: ~49 grams/180 yards of MC, ~5 grams/19 yards of CC
Small: ~58 grams/212 yards of MC, ~6 grams/22 yards of CC
Medium: ~65 grams/238 yards of MC, ~7 grams/25 yards of CC
Large: ~77 grams/282 yards of MC, ~8 grams/29 yards of CC
Long Style:
X-Small: ~42 grams/194 yards of MC, ~6 grams/28 yards of CC
Small: ~55 grams/254 yards of MC, ~7 grams/33 yards of CC
Medium: ~65 grams/300 yards of MC, ~8 grams/37 yards of CC
Large: ~75 grams/347 yards of MC, ~9 grams/42 yards of CC
Yardage is an approximation. I have included a fair bit of foot length for each size so this should accommodate all foot lengths. If you have extremely long feet, I would go with a little extra yardage just to be safe!
