“Tonight” is one of the most popular melodies from Leonard Bernstein’s Broadway hit “West Side Story”. Set in the Upper West Side of New York in the 1950s, the musical tells a modern version of Shakespeare’s tragic love story Romeo and Juliet. In a passionate duet sung by Tony and Maria during the famous balcony scene, the dazzled pair realizes their mutual love:
“Tonight, tonight, the world is full of light, withsuns and moons all over the place.”
The same melody reappears later when the 2 lovers eagerly anticipate their reunion:
“Tonight, tonight, I’ll see my love tonight. Today the minutes seem like hours. The hours go so slowly,and still the sky is light. Oh moon, grow bright, and make this endless day endless night.”

Day and night in the city are shown on the cuff of these reversible socks, while leg and foot are worked in a very old pattern that dates back to the dawn of (knitting) time
– as does the age-old story of tragic romance.
