Toorie
Toorie is fun hat with a unique construction that is perfect
for showing off a special skein of yarn. Hand dyed yarns as
well as solids are well suited to this design. With details like
slipped stitch decorative decreases,a gathered side split,
and just the right amount of slouch, this hat will suit a wide
variety of styles and personalities.
Pattern is written in one size with directions given for two
gauges to accommodate DK - bulky yarns. Notes are
provided to help with additional size modification. Knitting is
simple enough for an adventurous beginner, but interesting
enough for the advanced knitter.
Size & Fit:
Pattern is written for one size to fit the average adult female head with a circumference of about 19 – 23”. Because the hat has a split brim it will fit a wider range of head sizes than your average hat.
Gauge:
Numbers are provided for two gauges to accommodate DK – bulky weight yarns.
SM GAUGE: In stockinette stitch 23 sts and 32 rows = 4”. Suggested needle size US 5.
LG GAUGE: In stockinette stitch 14 sts and 18 rows = 4”. Suggested needle size US 10.5.
Yarn:
Wool/silk blends or yarn with a soft drape are especially suited to the aesthetic of this design. Sample shown was knit in the smaller gauge with Becoming Art’s Dulche Worsted (220 yds / 3.5 oz.) in the Spun Honey colorway. Dulche is a 50/50 merino/silk single ply.
When working the smaller gauge you will need approximately 200 yards of dk or light worsted weight yarn. When working the larger gauge you will need approximately 100 yards of chunky – bulky weight yarn.
Needles:
Circular needle of at least 16” in length and one DPN in US size 5 / 3.75mm (10½ / 6.5mm) or size required to obtain gauge. Hat is knit flat on a circular needle so exact needle length is not critical.
