I see colorwork motifs everywhere I go—from the scrolls in ironwork—to the cascades of water in a town-square fountain. This pattern pays homage to the careful planning that was involved in the creation of town squares, full of icons, public buildings, and landmarks. The two-color ribbed brim of the first hat holds a repeated vertical fountain motif. Beneath this colorful brim lives a band of stretchy, single-color ribbing. The alternate chart provides a more geometric option.

The yarn I selected for this project has so much yardage that I created another chart for a second hat. Both samples were worked using the same two skeins of yarn.

While working the charts, it’s helpful to lock the floating yarn every other stitch. Keeping the yarns in the same order will help keep consistent color dominance and also make the inside of the project almost as lovely as the outside.
