Tra Mittens
These mittens are knitted in the round on double pointed needles, and the pattern is written for dpns. They’re great for anyone wanting to get used to double pointed needles, as the only tricky part is the thumb. Once mastered though you’ll feel like a campion!
I love the ridge on these mittens – it’s a stitch pattern I’ve used in a few of my designs, and I’m sure I’ll continue to use it in more. I named this pattern Tra because it’s the Irish word for beach, and the ridges remind me of the marks the sea makes on the sand as it laps the shore.
The Donegal Twists DK is a gorgeous yarn to knit with, full of colours that twinkle as you work each stitch.
CONSTRUCTION
Knitted on double pointed needles in the round in one piece from the cuff.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, double pointed needles, in the round, cast off. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your stitches: mattress stitch.
YARN
One 100g hank of BRE Donegal Twists DK
72% Merino wool and 28% British wool, 270m/295yds per 100g
SUGGESTED NEEDLES
3.75mm double pointed needles
GAUGE (tension)
21 stitches and 40 rows to 10cm square over pattern. I obtained this gauge with 3.75mm needles. It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
SIZE & FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
to fit average adult hand. Length from cuff to top is 21cm. This is when not stretched; it can stretch to 27cm.
