‘Transversal’ has an asymmetric triangle shape, with an allover Syncopated Brioche stitch pattern. Simple and minimalistic, this shawl gets its name from its unusual construction, in fact ‘Transversal’ is worked as two different triangles, with the second triangle picked up along the edge of the first and both are all worked in an easily memorized pattern, making it a great project for knitters on the go!
Construction:
This richly textured shawl starts with a stretchy cast on, it is then worked back and forth in rows to create the first triangle, decreasing every row at one edge until just one stitch remains. Then stitches are picked up along one edge and a second triangle is created. The whole project is worked with two strands of yarn held together.
Description:
Skill Level: Intermediate.
Skills Needed: Cast on, Brioche Knit, Brioche Purl, Decrease in Brioche, Work flat, Pick up stitches.
One Size: Approximately 129 cm (50¾“) wingspan, 45 cm (17¾”) height
Materials:
ModeKnit Yarn – ModeWerk fingering weight yarn CYCA 1/3.5 oz, 366 m/400 yds, 80% Superwash Merino, 20% Nylon) - 2 skeins in Chrysis
US size 9 (5.5 mm) 32” (80 cm) circular needles or size needed to obtain correct gauge – a circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of stitches
US size 10¾ (7 mm) 32” (80 cm) circular needles or 2-3 sizes bigger than main needle
4 removable markers (m)
Smooth waste yarn to use as lifeline
Tapestry needle
Measuring tape and pins to block shawl to measurements
Gauge:
10 sts and 35 rows = 10cm/4” in Syncopated Brioche Stitch Pattern, unstretched, after blocking.
Keep in mind that in Brioche knitting, when counting stitches, each slipped stitch with its yarn over shawl counts as one stitch and, when counting rows, one visible row counts as two rows.
Gauge is not crucial for this project, but variations will affect yardage and final measurements.
