The Traveling Hat was designed in collaboration with Melissa Littlefield of Knitting the Stash using her locally grown and spun Shorn II yarn. The same cable pattern used in the travelling mitts wraps around this hat, utilizing the stretchy properties of double rib worked in wool to create a versatile, well-fitting hat.

SIZING
S/M (M/L)
TO FIT:
18–22 (20–24) inch/45.5–61 (51–66) cm head circumference
Because of the stretchy properties of the ribbed fabric, both hats will fit most adult head sizes. Choose the size that gives your preferred amount of wearing ease and length.

MATERIALS

YARN
Approximately 180 (220) yds/165 (200) m dk weight wool yarn
Sample shown in Shorn 2; 50% Corriedale 50% Corriedale Teeswater Cross, 250 yds/229 m per 3.5 oz/100g

NEEDLES
US 5/3.75 mm 16 inch/40 cm circular or 32 inch/80 cm circular for magic loop for brim
US 6/4 mm 16 inch/40 cm circular and set of double-pointed needles, or 32 inch/80 cm circular for magic loop or size needed to obtain gauge
US 3/3.25 mm straight or circular needles for Tubular Cast On

NOTIONS
cable needle
1 stitch marker
Optional pom pom maker

GAUGE
26 sts and 32 rnds = 4 inches/10 cm in k2, p2 rib, slightly stretched and after blocking.
The ribbed fabric is very stretchy making it difficult to measure gauge accurately. Use the needle size that gives you about 22 sts and 30 rounds = 4 inches/10 cm in Stockinette stitch in the round on the larger needles.

NOTES
The hat begins with a tubular cast on at the brim, and is worked in a cable and rib pattern to the top, which is rapidly decreased for the S/M version and decreased more slowly for the M/L version.
