Treasure Island Shawl
The sparkling blue of the sea surrounds the shores of a jewel-toned island in this easy, heart-shaped shawl inspired by the classic novel, Treasure Island.
The body begins with 3 stitches cast on at the center top edge and is worked down towards the bottom in stockinette stitch with yarn over increases. Optional beads can be added randomly during the last few rows of the body. The bottom of the shawl is then finished off with a simple lace edging that can incorporate beads for extra sparkle.
This pattern is a good introduction to lace knitting and/or beaded knitting. The beads are optional, so if both techniques are new to you, you may choose to omit the beads and concentrate on the lace.
The shawl is knit flat, but a long circular needle is used to hold the large number of stitches.
Two versions of the lace edging written instructions and charts are provided—one with and one without beading.
The first yarn calls for 100 yds of a bulky weight, and the second yarn calls for 500 yds of a sock/light fingering/3 ply weight that are held together throughout.
This pattern has been tested and tech edited.
Techniques Used:
• Knit
• Purl
• Increasing (M1, yarn over) and decreasing (k2tog and ssk)
• Reading a simple lace chart
• Beading and slipping a stitch (optional)
