Pattern description from Folk Style: “In many cultures, mothers ‘wear’ their babies as they go about their daily tasks. Lisa B. Evans created a colorful knitted version of what is traditionally constructed in woven fabric, taking inspiration from Middle Eastern kilim rugs and African kente cloth. She worked a kaleidoscope of warm colors in a combination of stripes, intarsia, and subtly textured linen stitch to give the rich look of antique textiles. The fabric lining, a batik cotton cloth in complementary colors, adds another layer of cultural tradition.”

Nashua Handknits Creative Focus Cotton (100% mercerized cotton; 93 yd (85 m)/50 g): #29 caramel, 5 skeins; #10 passion(red), #07 copper, and #31 black, 4 skeins each; #13 pettit purple and #28 beige, 3 skins each; #22 grass green, 2 skeins; #26 sage, 1 skein. Yarn is used double throughout.

Needles: Size 7 (4.5 mm): straight, set of 5 double-pointed (dpn), and 32” (80 cm) circular (cir). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: Size H/8 (4.75 mm) crochet hook and waste yarn for provisional cast-on; stitch holders; tapestry needle; pins; 1 yd (0.9 meter) of 45” (114 cm) lining fabric (use an old scarf or sarong, if desired); sharp-point sewing needle and matching thread for attaching lining; two wooden or decorative plastic rings with 4” (10 cm) diameter opening (available at fabric and craft stores).
