How These Potholders Are Made
Method 1: Classic Potholder is worked flat in rows before the front and back are joined together.

Method 2: Ring-Start Potholder introduces trinity stitch in turned rounds, allowing both sides of the potholder to be worked at the same time.

Method 3: Folded Potholder explores a clever folded construction.

Instructions for optional hanging loops are included for each method. An optional three-color variation is also included for the Classic Potholder.

Pattern is written in US crochet terms.

Little concentration required. Once setup rows or rounds are complete and stitch pattern is established, stitching is straightforward and your hands can work on autopilot.

Chain, single crochet, single crochet 3 together

Techniques Used
Working in rows, working in turned rounds, simple decreases (sc3tog), working in top loops of chain (instead of a chain space), working in back bar of a chain, changing color at the end of a row, single crochet seaming, and seaming with a whipstitch.

Each potholder style requires approximately 116 yds (106 m) / 66 g

The samples shown here were made with an H/8/5.0mm crochet hook and Knit Picks Dishie medium (worsted) weight cotton yarn (3½ oz/190 yds/100 g per ball) in the following colors: #29501 sunbaked (rust), #N7339 canvas (white), and #29504 inlet (gray green).

Yarn Note
This pattern is designed for medium-weight cotton yarn. Cotton is the preferred fiber for potholders because it tolerates heat better than synthetic fibers (some of which may melt when exposed to extreme heat) and provides a durable fabric suitable for everyday kitchen use.

Though exact gauge is not essential, for best appearance it should be close.
I used an H/8/5.0mm crochet hook. Select the hook size that gives the best appearance for your choice of yarn and your tension.
A significantly different gauge may require more or less yarn than listed.
