Trondra is named for a small island on the west coast of Shetland, and was my morning view for the week we were staying there.

My hat Tondra has a simple, clever construction: knit as one long tube from a provisional cast-on, it is then folded and twisted before being joined at the ribbing. The twist creates an elegant spiral crown for a hat, showcasing the geometric colourwork design. As the hat is fully lined, it is wonderfully warm on a windy Shetland day.

Circumference: 58 (53, 48.5, 43.5, 39, 34) cm, 23.25 (21.25, 19.5, 17.5, 15.5, 13.5)in !
Depth: 33 (29.5, 26, 23, 20.5, 18) cm, 13 (11.5, 10.25, 9, 8, 7) in.

Yarn:
Jamieson and Smith Shetland Heritage, 25g = 110m / 120yds,
MC - Indigo 3 (2, 2, 2, 2, 1) skeins
CC1 - Flugga White 3 (2, 2, 2, 2, 1) skeins

Or substitute with:
270 (220, 180, 150, 120, 90) m / 300 (240, 200, 160, 130, 100) yds light fingering weight yarn, in two contrasting colours. I would recommend choosing a sticky yarn (not superwash) with a high wool content. The hat is fully lined so this yarn will not be in direct contact with your skin.

You will also need 370 (300, 240, 180, 150, 110) m / 400 (330, 260, 200, 160, 120) yds lace weight or heavy lace weight yarn. This should be a soft and delicate yarn that you are happy to wear close to your skin. The yarn can either tone with the fair isle sections, or provide a pop of colour contrast on the inside of the hat.
