Tropical Garden Vest
From the book: “I think of this as a classic grandfather’s Fair Isle vest deconstructed. I have always loved Fair Isle patterns and wanted to invent my own. The motifs here are inspired by South American textiles, with birds and butterflies giving a hint of the tropics. At one side a garter stitch panel is worked as a separate piece and wrapped around from front to back, in this case with a little swing added to the drape by working short rows at the hem. Leave out the side panel and make it entirely in the Fair Isle pattern if you’d like.”
Yarn Notes: The pattern calls for 5 skeins of KPM in brown (MC) and 1 each in 8 accent colors (melon, hot coral, light olive, sky blue, peacock, lilac, chartreuse, and denim).
Gauge Notes: Additional gauge measurement: 24 sts and 48 rows = 4 inches in garter stitch on larger needles.
Pattern Notes: “This vest is asymmetrical. The Front and Back have left armhole shaping only. The Gusset, which is sewn to the Front and Back along their straight edges, has right armhole shaping only. After working the ribbing, the Front and Back are both worked from the Chart, beginning and ending as indicated. You may work armhole and neck shaping from the Chart, or as given in the text.”
