I have been experimenting with the Contiguous Shoulder Method for top-down constructed garments for a while now, but I was never quite happy with the way the “shoulder seam” looked.

However, using the contiguous method is a super easy way to start a garment from the top down since it does not involve short rows or fiddly ways of cutting yarn in multiple places, picking up stitches, and restarting, etc. Through my experimentation, I have come up with this revised manner of starting and working a contiguous shoulder that utilizes decreases instead of increases. I believe that gives the shoulder seam more “strength” and a very even look.

The Tulip Cardigan features a very pretty lace pattern that resembles tulip flowers.

Sizes: XS (S, M, L1, L2)(XL, 2XL, 3XL) - to fit 34 (36, 38, 40, 42)(44, 48, 52)’’/ 86 (91, 97, 102, 107)(112, 122, 132) cm chest, finished garment size is 36 (38, 40, 42, 44)(47.5, 51.5, 55.5)”/91 (97, 102, 107, 112)(121, 131, 141) cm.

Yardage: Fingering weight yarn - 1000 (1100, 1200, 1250, 1350) (1450, 1550, 1650] yards/915 (1005, 1100, 1150, 1240) (1325, 1420, 1510) m - for 3/4 long sleeves (for long sleeves, add approx. 100 yards/90 m more yarn)

Yarn Ideas: Wollmeise Pure, Holst Garn Coast, Madelinetosh Merino Light, Dornröschen-Wolle Sockenwolle, Wollwunderwelt Handgefärbte Sockenwolle High Twist, Wollmeise Sockenwolle 80/20 Twin, Malabrigo Yarn Sock, --- I recommend one colored yarn, nothing with multiple colors because the lace pattern will get lost.

Needles: U.S. 4 (3.5 mm) circular needles - 16” & 32” in length always use the size needle that gets gauge!
U.S. 3 (3.25 mm) circular needles - 16” & 32” in length

U.S. 0 (2 mm) circular needle – 24” or longer - used to pick up & knit stitches for the neckband & button band
Small sized crochet hook (for provisional cast-on)

Notions: stitch markers (2 different types or colors), scrap yarn to hold stitches, tapestry needle, crochet hook (depending on which provision cast-on method you choose to use), 9-13 buttons (approx. ¾”/2 cm in diameter)

Gauge: 24 sts & 36 rows for 4”/10 cm in stockinette (after washing and blocking) on size U.S. 4 (3.5 mm) needles

3.25 mm & 3.5mm – 40 cm Rundstricknadeln & Nadelspiel
2 mm - 60 cm & 80 cm Rundstricknadeln – um Maschen anzustricken
Häkelnadel – für provisorischen Maschenanschlag

Maschenprobe: 24 M & 36 R = 4”/10,26 cm mit größerer Nadelstärke gestrickt, gewaschen und leicht gespannt (ca. (25 M & 38 R = 4”/10,26 cm ungewaschen)

Sonstiges: Maschenmarkierringe (2 verschiedene), Restgarn um Maschen stillzulegen, Stopfnadel, Häkelnadel (provisorischen Maschenanschlag), 9-13 buttons (ca. 2 cm im Diameter)
