Ever since I discovered traditional, handmade Turkish socks, I have been in love with the diagonal colorwork patterns used to decorate them. In this sweater, I’ve expanded a traditional sock motif to cover the body and sleeves of a pullover. The pattern forms a “V” at the center front and back of the body and the sleeves are worked with the diagonals facing in opposite directions to further accentuate the mirror image around the central axis.
Although Turkish lace knitting is less well known, stockings were also made with lace patterns in Anatolia and other parts of Turkey. I’ve used a variation of a lace ribbing pattern from a sock for the bands on this sweater, with the addition of an extra yarn over at the beginning of Round 4 to create a bias effect that complements the diagonal colorwork.
