This shawl is simple and incredibly meditative to knit. It is the perfect project for brioche beginners, and for more experienced knitters. Simple in construction, this shawl lets your yarns shine and your mind rest. You’ll be amazed at how quickly this project will fly off your needles!
Turning Roads Blanket uses the same motif as my Turning Roads Hat, showl (a combination of a shawl and cowl), blanket, sweater and maybe more… Because it is a really fun and interesting motif. Dress to impress!

CONSTRUCTION and NOTES

Turning Roads Shawl is a sideways, asymmetrical shawl which begins with just 5 stitches at one tip and grows to its widest point. The pattern is easily adjusted to any size by simply adding or reducing repeat sections. The entire shawl is worked in an easy and meditative back and forth brioche stitch pattern. WS rows are worked with no increases or decreases.
For brioche newbies, Turning Roads Shawl could be your first brioche shawl, as the pattern is full of detailed explanations and lots of video links that show all the stitches and helpful hints. The pattern includes both charted instructions and fully written row-by-row instructions, so you can choose which you prefer to work from.

It’s also pleasant to knit since there is no need to count the stitches on every row. The wingspan edge increases on every other right side row and is the longest side of the triangle. The pattern can be easily adapted to the amount of available yarn: knit-until-you-run-out-of-yarn.

YARN: Drops Alpaca, (100% Camelid – Alpaca)
50gr /1.76 oz - 183yds/167m
MC yarn – Wheat Field, 9029
CC yarn – Light Grey Pearl Mix, 9020; Or use any other sport weight yarn.

YARN CONSUMPTION: 130 gr / 4.65 oz of each color, MC and CC. Sample shawl weighs approx. 260 gr / 9.31 oz.
Note that if you use different weight yarn or different needle size, the yardage, weight and dimensions of your shawl may differ from mine.

NEEDLES: 3.5mm / US 4, 100 cm (40“) circular needle, or size needed to get right gauge. (Use a long circular needle to accommodate the large number of stitches.)
SKILL LEVEL: Adventurous Beginner. You should be familiar with two-color brioche knitting (slipped stitches worked in conjunction with yarn overs).

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:
Wingspan: Approx. 172 cm / 67.5“
Depth at widest point: 78 cm / 30.5“
Measurements taken from relaxed fabric after blocking.

OTHER TOOLS: Tapestry needle; scissors; blocking tools (wires and pins) ; if needed, a row counter and stitch markers (to separate the repeats along the row)

GAUGE: 17 sts x 21 rows = 10cm / 4“ in two-color brioche stitch pattern after blocking.

Needle sizes are recommendations only. Always use the needle size necessary to achieve given gauge (to save your time). (My personal knitting tension is tight).

TECHNIQUES USED: Brioching back and forth, brioche decreases/increases (brkyobrk, brk1, brp1, sl1yo), k1, p1, kfb, kfbf, SSK, K2tog, Sl1K2togP.
