This whimsical afghan illustrates “The 12 Days of Christmas,” a song derived from a 1909 arrangement of a traditional folk melody by English composer Frederic Austin.

The twelve panels of the afghan feature a partridge, doves, hens, calling birds, gold rings, a goose, a swan, a maid milking a cow, a drummer, a piper, a dancer, and a lord leaping. These designs are incorporated into the afghan by duplicate stitch embroidery after the background has been knitted.
